The stairs are steep and there is a rancid smell emanating from the bottom. I feel like a stone is strapped to each of my feet. I reach out in front of me and grab on to Leo’s shirt in desperation. I fear it’s the only way I’ll make it down. No one is saying a word; the only sounds are our heavy breaths, but Leo reaches behind him and touches my hand. The simple gesture sets my insides on fire and eases my nerves. Finally, we come to the bottom of the creepy stairs, but I keep my hold on Leo, partially because I’m terrified and partially because I need to feel him near me. My head is in constant combat with my heart and I’m torn on which side I should follow.
“Eden?” Julian snaps me out of my daze.
“Hmm?” I realize that the boy Noah is holding a torch.
“The lights don’t work down here, so this is the best we’ve got,” Julian explains. A soft flickering light allows us to get our bearings on exactly where we are. I take in the vastness of the room and get a strange feeling that I’ve been here before. As far as I know, I’ve never been below the first floor. Everyone’s staring at me as if they are waiting for me to react to something. I get the feeling that they have information that I don’t. It appears, however, that Julian is just as much in the dark as I am.
“Jules?” I turn to him, hopeful that I’m right, and that he will tell me the truth. “What is this place? I have the strangest sense that I’ve been here before.” He takes my hand and reaches for the torch, looking carefully around us.
“I can honestly say that I’ve never been in here, but it’s the prison court. It feels so…icky in here.” His body shakes as if an ice-cold blast ran through him. “This is why I recruited the boys—they know every corner of this maze.” He holds out the fire, examining the area, while Noah lights another torch.
“Follow us,” says Xander. The fire illuminates his face, casting shadows that make his cheeks appear hollowed out. His eyes narrow and dart between us. “Stay in the center, directly behind us at all times. Do not linger or wander away and absolutely do not touch anything! As a matter of fact, you probably shouldn’t even look inside the cells.” With the instructions conveyed, the boys turn around and walk away.
“Well that’s cryptic as hell,” Phoenix says and moves as close to them as possible.
Gabe gives Phoenix a slight nudge and cranes his neck to make sure we all fall into line.
I take my place behind Leo. He grabs my hands and pulls me toward him; I trip and bump into his back. He reaches around and holds me against him, then turns his head slightly, his breath tickling my nose.
“I’ve got you. You know that, right? No matter what, you are my top priority.
